Two days ago I wrote the following article:
"SUSE & openSUSE leadership declare Conservatives to be "Rotten Flesh""
That piece consisted, almost entirely, of direct quotes (with links and screenshots) of openSUSE and SUSE leadership making some of the most hateful and bigoted statements imaginable -- declaring, repetaedly, that any disagree with a narrow set of political views are "Rotten Flesh" that needs to be "cut out".
As I am a former elected Board Member of openSUSE (and one of the highest profile past employees of SUSE -- so much so that SUSE issued a press release when I left the company), I wanted to make it crystal clear that I do not support the current hateful actions of openSUSE.
The article I wrote was in no way hateful -- in fact... I, clearly, spoke out against the hate on display from openSUSE leadership.
I then posted that article to the r/openSUSE Subreddit. Because the topic is important and -- again -- I do not want people thinking I support that sort of hate. I certainly won't be calling anyone "Rotten Flesh".
That post was almost immediately removed. And I was banned from posting or commenting to r/openSUSE.
Did my article promote hate? Of course not. Anyone who read my article knows that.
But my article did point out the hateful and bigoted statements of openSUSE leadership. Which cannot be allowed.
So I was silenced. And smeared. And falsely labeled as someone who is spreading "hate".
Does that technically constitute libel on the part of the "openSUSE Mod Team"? Yes. Yes, it does.
I then sent an email to the openSUSE project email list. The appropriate place for a past openSUSE Board Member -- historically, one of the most active and prominent advocates for openSUSE -- to post such messages regarding the project.
Here is that message, in full:
As a former elected openSUSE Board member, I was absolutely disgusted by some of the recent statements made by both current and former fellow Board members (and SUSE employees).
To call openSUSE users and contributors "Rotten Flesh" that need to be "cut out"? And then to double down on that statement with confirmations from leadership (past and present) and SUSE employees?
That is abhorrent.
The hate and bigotry on display from openSUSE leadership is repellant. I am absolutely ashamed to have any association (past or present) with an organization which would take such extreme, hateful stances.
I chronicled this in an article -- in large part to make sure that nobody will associate my past leadership role within openSUSE to mean that I support the current, hateful actions.

Who knows if the openSUSE Board or moderators will allow this message to be posted to the mailing list. They should -- if they truly claim to still be "open". I would hope that is the case.

That message was promptly blocked by the openSUSE leadership with the following statement:
My message -- the message of a past openSUSE Board Member (one of the highest profile ones in the history of the project) -- was rejected for containing... and I quote... "bad stuff".
Bad. Stuff.
Now, to be fair, my email was certainly not mincing words. I was clear about my disgust for their hateful statements. Just the same... I expressed no hate towards any group (political or otherwise).
I can think of only two possible reasons why my posts are being actively censored by openSUSE leadership:
- People knowing what their leadership said makes openSUSE (and SUSE) look very, very bad.
- Those same statements also make a general political ideology look bad.
And, since I provided detailed quotes -- accompanied by links and screenshots to verify everything -- it becomes critical to silence me in every way they can.
If openSUSE is silencing one of their highest profile, past Board Members? You can be pretty sure they're censoring just about everyone who they consider to be "Rotten Flesh" (aka "people who speak out against hate").
